Copying Portable Mail to new drive?

Help!
I got a new portable drive and so copied over the Portable Mail folder from my old drive to the new one.
When I open Portable Mail on the new drive, the inbox is all there, but there's no content to any of the notes except for new mail that came in after the copy over.
I retreated to my old drive, and got on with working in my mail while I thought about this. I ejected that drive. When I plugged it back in, same problem: inbox all there and listed, but no content to any of the email.
Please, could anyone advise as to how to repair this so I can get my life back together?
