Portable Firefox 3 rc4 (OS X) won't work

Posted by Richard B at June 27. 2008
I have installed Portable Firefox 3 rc4 on both a USB hard drive and a USB flash drive on a G4 (PPC) Mac running OS 10.5.3.

In each of these installs I get a white circle slash on the Firefox Icon. I get a message saying that it is not supported on this architecture. The installer package also shows the circle slash.

According to the page on MacUpdate.com this is a Universal Binary build which should run on both the PPC architecture and the Intel architecture.

Does anyone know what is going on here?

Thanks!

Sorry, you are right. I didn't realize that Platypus, the application that I usually use to package portable applications, create an Intel version intstead of a universal one.

I'll publish Portable Firefox Universal in about a day.

Thanks.

Gand,

Thanks very much! I will look forward to seeing the Universal one.

Although I regret leaving some of the extensions I have used with Firefox 2 behind, I have made the change to Firefox 3 because 2 simply would not handle my bookmarks anymore and I would just as soon use the same version on my portable drives just for the sake of using a single interface.

Gand,

I have downloaded and installed the Universal build.

(I am on it at the moment.) It is working just fine.

The "Copy Profile" option is very, very cool...and helpful. I transferred things over quite well. Only two addons were unhappy even though they are FX 3 ready. I just uninstalled them and reinstalled them and they are now happy. (Nightly Tester Tools and Password Exporter)

Many thanks!

:)

Richard
