Use the Activity Monitor utility to kill the process:

  1. Click the "face" icon in the Dock (typically the leftmost icon) to bring up a Finder window.
  2. Select "Applications" from the icon list in the left part of the window
  3. Open the directory "Utilities" in the right pane
  4. Launch the application "Activity Monitor"
  5. Select the Nvu process
  6. Use the "Quit Process" button in the upper left to kill it.
