Inkscape's main motivation is to provide the Open Source community with a fully W3C compliant XML, SVG, and CSS2 drawing tool. Additional planned work includes conversion of the codebase from C/Gtk to C++/Gtkmm, emphasizing a lightweight core with powerful features added through an extension mechanism, and the establishment of a friendly, open, community-oriented development processes.
If you downloaded Inkscape package for MacOSX 10.3 you might not see the tool icons on the left of the program screen (instead you see a blue, aquafied rectangle). This is a bug in the package put together by M. Rick.
Ctrl-clik to "show package content" command in the finder to open the application package;
then move to Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/share/,
and copy the inkscape folder to /sw/share/ .
If this folder does not exist on your system, just create it using e.g. the terminal. After that all tool icons should show up nicely in the program interface.
