iRATE radio is a collaborative filtering system for music. You rate the tracks it downloads and the server uses your ratings and other people's to guess what you'll like. The tracks are downloaded from websites which allow free and legal downloads of their music.

iRATE radio is a client-server system. A program called the iRATE client downloads and plays MP3s, while the iRATE server keeps track of the relationships between users' listening preferences. The client asks the server for a list of MP3 tracks and downloads those tracks from their respective web sites:



To listen to iRATE Radio, individual users download the iRATE client program to to their computers. When the client is run, it contacts the iRATE server over the Internet and asks for a list of songs the user might be interested in hearing.
