To install packages from source with Fink, you need the Apple Developer Tools (Xcode) installed.
You can find Xcode:
- from the Xcode Tools CD that came with Panther
- after you register for free, you can get them from the: Apple Developer Connection
- on your hard disk at directory Application>Installer>Xcode Tools
- Double click on Developer.mpkg icon
- After license agreement select Ad hoc install button
- This will allow you to select the X11 SDK checkbox, which is by default not selected
- Click on Install button
